Turn Back the Clock on Aging Skin With SurFACE

Your body is filled with nutrients, growth factors, and other amazing substances that keep you healthy and repair damage from injury, sun exposure, and aging. You’ve heard of rejuvenating your skin with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). But now there’s surFACE™, a metabolically active, trademarked skin rejuvenation procedure that was developed by Dr. Wade McKenna, available exclusively at Dr. McKenna’s Orthopedics and Biologics in Dallas and Trophy Club, Texas.

Dr. McKenna offers two types of surFACE treatments: one that uses PRP created from your own blood and another that harnesses the power of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCS).

To formulate the PRP serum, a small amount of blood is drawn from your arm. The blood is then spun in a machine called a centrifuge to create a substance that contains a high concentration of healing platelets. Platelets are small cell fragments that are responsible for coagulating your blood when you’re injured and rebuilding your tissues.

MSCs drawn from your bone marrow. Uniquely, both surFACE procedures also use:

  • FDA-cleared allografts
  • Microneedling with the SkinPen®
  • Proprietary injection techniques

The surFACE treatment only takes about an hour or two to prepare and administer. Your face may be sore, red, and slightly swollen for up to three days.

Allografts Go Directly Into Your Skin

We use FDA-cleared allografts that are created from donations of amniotic sac tissue and fluids collected during a healthy cesarean delivery. The allografts — which have 10 times the amount of growth factors and proteins as self-donated PRP — create new blood vessels to help repair tissues. Dr. McKenna injects the allografts directly into areas of concern, such as:

  • Under-eye troughs
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Deep creases and wrinkles
  • Sagging skin

He follows the allograft injections with microneedling combined with either PRP or bone-marrow-derived MSCs.

Microneedling Triggers Skin Repair

The SkinPen’s sterile, single-use needle cartridges instigate your body’s healing processes by puncturing your skin with hair-thin, sterile needles. The needles create long, thin wound channels that stimulate your body to produce new collagen by undergoing a wound-repair process. Your skin passes through three phases:

Inflammation

Once the needles pierce your skin, your blood rushes in to sweep away debris and old cells and disinfect the wounds. The wounding process increases circulation to the area, which is why you’ll be red and slightly swollen for a few days after your treatment.

Proliferation

Your body replaces the wounded skin cells with granulation tissue, which starts to strengthen your skin and provide a supportive matrix. You also build new blood vessels, which continue to nourish and cleanse your tissues over time.

Remodeling

The wound channels are completely rebuilt with new collagen and elastin, remodeling your skin from the inside out. Over the next weeks to months, your skin becomes stronger, thicker, and more elastic.

PRP Infuses Your Skin With Healing Platelets

Dr. McKenna and our team create a PRP serum from a small amount of your arm blood. The PRP serum has up to five times the normal concentration of healing platelets. Platelets are small cell fragments that are responsible for coagulating your blood when you’re injured, and rebuilding your tissues.

We coat your skin with the PRP serum before your microneedling session. The serum creates a smooth surface that allows the SkinPen to glide freely. The PRP flows deeply into wound channels created by the SkinPen, suffusing your skin with platelets that are rich with fibrins, growth factors, and other healing substances that accelerate the skin-remodeling process.

Bone Marrow MSCs Create New Tissue

If you have large areas of volume loss and sagging, Dr. McKenna may recommend combining microneedling with bone-marrow-derived MSCs, which are withdrawn from an area near your hip, in the iliac crest. You’re under light anesthesia during the bone-marrow graft procedure, which Dr. McKenna performs in the safety and comfort of MOAB office. You can return to your normal activities later in the day.

The bone-marrow aspirate (BMA) is filled with your own MSCs, which exactly match your DNA. As with the PRP serum, Dr. McKenna coats your face with the BMA before microneedling. The serum helps the SkinPen glide smoothly, and the microneedling gives the MSCs access to the deepest layers of your skin

The MSCs not only become the cells you need to remodel and rejuvenate your skin, they also stimulate the stem cells in the treatment area to do the same. As with PRP and microneedling, you’ll notice the difference in your skin within weeks. The benefits continue to accumulate over the next several months as your skin becomes:

  • Smoother
  • Thicker
  • More elastic
  • Healthier
  • More glowing
  • More even in tone
